Nationwide Candlelight Vigils Held for Five-Year-Old Kumanjayi 'Little Baby'

Vigils were organized at various places across Australia on Thursday in memory of Kumanjayi Little Baby, aged five years, whose body was found dead on April 30 near Alice Springs. At one of such emotional vigils held in Alice Springs, the mother of the little baby addressed people calling her baby girl as a princess, and talked about her love for colors like pink, Bluey, and even K-pop music. She said, “Please, if you can see me anywhere, just find me as the brightest star.” A week before her death, Kumanjayi Little Baby, a mute little child, went missing from Old Timers Camp in Alice Springs on April 25. This led to massive searches all over, and soon resulted in nationwide shock when the child’s body was discovered a week later. Arrest of a man, Jefferson Lewis, aged 47, in connection with the murder of the child has caused great unrest in the community leading to riots outside the hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Three child protection officers have already been suspended in connection with the case.
